The Chicago Tribune reports that pollution from Midwest oil refineries could increase 40% over the next decade due in part to several refineries undergoing major expansions. The increased capacity is needed to refine theĀ increased supply of crude piped in from Canada’s Athabascan oil sands.Minnesota’s Pine Bend Refinery is undergoing a $100 million expansion to increase capacity to 330,000 barrels per day. Murphy Oil in Superior, Wisconsin is in the process of expanding capacity by 700%.
