Researchers at Purdue University have created high-resolution maps that show volume and location of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States in stunning detail. The maps and system, called Vulcan, show CO2 emissions at more than 100 times more detail than was previously available and breaks the data down hourly, as opposed to the monthly reports that have been issued to date.In a short video produced by the researchers the difference between daytime, when maximum CO2 production occurs, and nighttime is observable in the pulsating clouds that eventually waft over the North Atlantic. Vulcan reveals that the southeastern U.S. is a larger producer of carbon dioxide than previously believed and, yes, the Twin Cities are a “hot spot.”
